What are Merit Scholarships?
Merit scholarships are any scholarships without financial assistance based on requirements, according to LSA Scholarships. About forty of these scholarships are given out by the school to incoming first-year students every year. The requirements for each of these scholarships are different.
How Are Students Selected for Merit Scholarships?
First-year LSA students who are accepted and meet all requirements are given Merit Scholarships. Every new student is considered for all the scholarships for which they are eligible. We make use of information from LSA Admission applications to decide on merit scholarships.
A student’s preferred degree or specific field of study, professional interests, leadership experience, academic success, contributions to the community, and even their place of residence may all be taken into consideration as well. You do not need to submit any more information to be eligible for these scholarships.
Note: the FAFSA and CSS applicants do not need to be submitted by students who are only eligible for merit scholarships.
Merit Scholarship Opportunities
Students and their parents frequently enquire with us about some of the well-known merit scholarships with a greater number than forty percent possibilities. To find out more about such specific opportunities, keep reading listed below.
All of these opportunities come with a four-year renewable scholarship, the Bell Scholarship. To be eligible for an award, you do not need to apply. All newly admitted students are now taken under consideration immediately. You are free to still decide to fill out an application.
The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship Program (External Application Required)
Students attending universities or colleges may find the following third-party, non-university scholarship opportunities interesting. The listing of an external scholarship opportunity does not indicate or indicate any affiliation between the University and the external program; rather, it is meant merely as a resource for students.
First-year University of Michigan students who demonstrate outstanding academic ability, reside in an eligible county, and are pursuing an undergraduate science-related degree in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts or the College of Engineering are eligible to apply for the Bell Scholarship.
Bell Scholars are awarded a four-year undergraduate renewable scholarship. Renewal every year is subject to good academic advancement. Annually, in-state students receive $10,000. Annually, out-of-state students receive a grant of $20,000.
Students must meet all eligibility requirements and submit a separate application via the Bell Scholarship website to be eligible for this scholarship. The semester 2024–2025 application period is now closed.
The Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Scholarship
The Bentley Scholarship Program was founded in 1983 by the Alvin M. and Arvella D. Bentley Foundation to honor and promote public service among Michigan students. The Bentley Scholarship is given to new LSA students who live in Michigan, have a strong academic record, shown leadership qualities in their high school years, and want to work in public service.
To be eligible for this honor, six to eight new LSA students are invited to campus each year for interviews. These pupils are chosen from within the first-year admissions pool. Two of these applicants are chosen to get the Bentley Scholarship.
Recipients of the Bentley Scholarship are awarded a renewable scholarship worth $15,000 annually for four years of undergraduate education. Only students who are nominated for this award will be notified. Students who are not selected for this award will still be considered for all other Four-Year Renewable Scholarships they are qualified for.
Other Merit Scholarships
There are more than thirty-five merit scholarships available through LSA Scholarships in addition to the ones mentioned above, and the majority of them do not need early action admission.
Once more, all newly admitted first-year students will be given our Four-Year Renewable Scholarship consideration.
The FAFSA or CSSScholarships2162 are not necessary to be completed by incoming LSA students who are solely interested in merit scholarships.
